ASGARD is a Large Scale Integrated Project supported by the EU within 7th Framework Programme (EC-GA No. 295825) focusing on research of advanced/novel nuclear fuels fabrication and their respective reprocessing issues for Generation IV reactors.
It is coordinated by Chalmers Technical University (Prof. Christian Ekberg).
ASGARD seeks integration between reactor, fuel and recycling communities, which today is lacking. In some cases it results in discrepancies between the reactor design on one hand, and the technological feasibility of fabricating, dissolving and reprocessing the selected fuel on the other hand.
ASGARD is an integrated effort of 16 institutions from 9 European countries.
It was launched on January 1, 2012 and its planned duration is 48 months.
The Strategic Energy Technology plan of the European Commission identifies fission energy as an important contributor to meet long-term objectives for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Development of nuclear power by the introduction of fast neutron Generation IV reactors will help to reduce the gas emissions environmental benefits. ASGARD project’s main objective is to provide a structured R&D framework bridging the research on fuel fabrication and reprocessing issues. The main focus will lie on future fuels for a sustainable nuclear fuels cycle. The main problem today is to tie the recycling of used nuclear fuel to the fabrication of new fuels, which show efficient recycling (transmutation) behaviour in new reactor systems.
